August 23, 2015
When moving to a new place, whether in a new state or the one you live in already, you often have transportation to consider. How will you get your children to school, how will you get to work, do you need even need a car? Honolulu is a tourist destination and as such has many different types of public transportation to get not only visitors but residents alike, to and from places.
Companies like Waikiki Trolley, offer shuttles to and from popular destinations on the island via various scenic, historic and island tours. Numerous taxi companies, like Charley’s Taxi, EcoCab, and The Cab, offer fast and friendly service to the island of O’ahu for everything from late nigh rides home to transportation from the airport.
The Bus, Honolulu’s bus system, offers easily assessable bus stop locations, island wide; fares for youth are $1.25 and $2.50 for adults as of July 2015. The Bus even offers different passes and programs to fit your needs with commuter options to offer as benefits for employers. In 2011, The Bus was ranked number one for “best coverage and proximity to workplaces out of 100 cities surveyed” (Park, Gene. "TheBus No. 1 in Rides to Work." Star Advertiser. N.p., Apr.-May 2011. Web. 21 Aug. 2015.).
The Honolulu Rail project was first approved in January of 2011 as a way to improve the increasing traffic problems faced by Honolulu. The first portion of the rail, from Kapolei to Aloha Stadium, is slated to open in 2018 with the entire infrastructure expected to be completed in 2019. "The Rail Facts." Rail Facts. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Aug. 2015.
The rail system’s fleet of approximately 80 train cars, will boast steel-wheel on steel-rail air conditioned train cars and will travel from Kapolei to Ala Moana between 4 a.m. and midnight. Although the construction is not yet completed, it is expected to alleviate approximately 40,000 car trips daily. Fares have not yet been released, however The Bus and the rail system will use a single far system to access both with student and senior discounts still applying. "The Rail Facts." Rail Facts. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Aug. 2015.
Despite your needs, Honolulu is sure to offer a mode of transportation that fits your lifestyle.
